North East Screen talks to Production Manager Sarah Howie, another of of this year’s WFTV mentoring scheme participants

Sarah was selected at the end of last year to take part in the 2026 Women in Film and TV’s Four Nations Mentoring Scheme, the prestigious 6 month programme which supports mid-career women in the film and TV industry. North East Screen with Screen Alliance North partners have once again supported women across the North to take part.

North East based production manager Sarah continues to work on major productions filmed in the region, The Feud, The Red King, Transaction and is currently working on the latest North East Production Funded project The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole.

We’re delighted to talk to her about her experience of the programme.

What made you want to take part in the WFTV mentoring scheme?

I wanted to take part in the WFTV mentoring scheme because a colleague had taken part in a similar WFTV scheme and said it was invaluable. I was looking for guidance from someone with industry experience who could help me navigate the next stage of my career. The opportunity to learn from a mentor, gain insight into my new role, and build meaningful professional connections made the programme particularly appealing. I was also excited by the chance to be part of a supportive network of women working across film and television.

What has your involvement been like?

My experience so far has been incredibly positive. The mentoring sessions have given me valuable space to discuss my goals, challenges, and career development in a constructive and encouraging environment. I’ve gained practical advice, new perspectives, and greater confidence in my decision-making. The wider WFTV community has also been welcoming and inspiring. The workshops are excellent, a good range of topics that touch on all parts of the industry.

How do you feel this will impact your career?

I believe the WFTV Four Nations Mentoring Scheme will have a lasting impact on my career. It’s helping me develop a clearer sense of direction, identify opportunities for growth, and build the confidence to pursue new goals. The guidance and industry insight I’ve received are already influencing how I approach my work, and the connections I’ve made will continue to be valuable as I progress professionally.

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to be part of the programme. Having access to experienced professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and support others is invaluable. I would highly recommend the WFTV mentoring scheme to anyone looking to develop their career, expand their network, and gain confidence within the industry. A shout out to Helen Bullough who has been a real powerhouse for our Northern cohort.
