What to expect on a North East Screen Scout About

Scout Abouts give attendees a first-hand look at the North East’s best filming-friendly environments. Each trip is designed to capture the diversity productions seek, from industrial landscapes and sci-fi settings to period and atmospheric locations, providing a curated snapshot of the region’s possibilities.

How a Scout About works

Each Scout About is a two-day, small-group familiarisation trip led by our Film Office team. The itinerary blends iconic landmarks with lesser-seen spots, giving you a clear sense of both the region’s recognisable locations and the hidden gems that help productions stand out.

Every trip is carefully paced. You’ll have enough time at each site to understand how it can work creatively and practically, with seamless transitions between stops so you can focus on the places themselves.

The types of locations you’ll explore

Scout Abouts are themed to help you see how genres can be realised on the ground. Recent examples have included:

  • Towns and transport: bridges, rail connections, industrial corridors and large-scale infrastructure.

  • Sci-fi and futuristic environments: contemporary civic buildings, dramatic interiors and bold architectural structures.

  • Industrial and coastal settings: ports, fabrication yards, waterfronts and industrial estates.

  • Urban centres: civic spaces, modern developments, characterful streets and landmark buildings.

This mix helps you understand the breadth of options within short travel times, and how locations across towns and cities link together for filming.

What to expect

Trips typically begin at a central pick-up point, with travel and timings arranged in advance. You’ll move through a planned route of locations that match the theme – for example, industrial corridors, regenerated districts, contemporary cityscapes or expansive natural backdrops.

Across the two days, the Film Office team will:

  • Highlight creative potential, filming considerations and access points.
  • Introduce you to local contacts, businesses and partners where relevant.
  • Offer insight into how productions of different scales have used similar locations.

Meals, travel between sites and accommodation (where required) are arranged for you.

“I love how well we were treated, and that our time was respected”

What you’ll receive ahead of a trip

During a Scout About, you’ll receive concise fact files for each location on the route. These give you quick context while you’re on-site and act as a reference after the trip – including:

  • A short overview of the site.

  • Travel distances to major towns, stations and airports.

  • Access notes, restrictions and filming considerations.
